Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese Zaaton, Zalatan. Further etymology is unknown. Possibly from Arabic صِرَاطَيْن (ṣirāṭayn, “two paths”).[1] Other theories include:[2]:

- Latin terram saeptam (“surrounded land”);
- Named after a Moorish lord Zalatane
