From Latin Seleucia, from Ancient Greek Σελεύκεια (Seleúkeia), from Σέλευκος (Séleukos, “Seleucus”) + -εια (-eia, “-ia: forming place names”), usually in honor of Seleucus I, founder of the Seleucid Empire which succeeded to Alexander the Great’s conquests in Syria and Central Asia.
