Etymology

First attested as tesla in 772 or 776. Ultimately from Old Dutch Tesla. Likely derived from (a compound of) Proto-Germanic *tehswô (right, southern). A derivation from *þehslô- (adze) (referring here to an adze-shaped elevated area or to the supposed adze-like shape of the island) is less likely. The spelling with x is due to influence of West Frisian Teksel.
