Noun

Vagina f (genitive Vagina, plural Vaginen or Vaginas)

  1. (anatomy) vagina
  2. (by extension) the female sexual organs including the vulva

Usage notes

  • The plural Vaginen is prescribed by most dictionaries, but Vaginas is predominant in general usage.
  • The stylistic level of Vagina is similar to that of English vagina, though the German word is somewhat less frequent in the vernacular. Both Vagina and the loan translation Scheide may loosely include the vulva (as in English). In formal style, the euphemisms Schambereich or (dated) Scham are widely used as well. There is considerable variation in the vernacular with Muschi being possibly the most common.
