From Proto-Finnic *airo (compare Estonian aer), borrowed from Proto-Germanic *airō (“oar”) (compare Swedish åra).[1] First attested in Ericus Schroderus: Lexicon Latino-Scondicum ("Latin-Scandinavian Dictionary", 1637).
