From Proto-Mon-Khmer *pɔɔk (to peel). Cognate with Muong póc, Khmer បក (bɑɑk, to peel), Mon လ္ပံက်, Semai pook.

Probably unrelated to Old Chinese (OC *[p]ˤrok) (B-S) (SV: bác) and Thai ปอก (bpɔ̀ɔk), which might be connected with róc, lóc instead.
