From Proto-Celtic *bristi- (“haste”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰris-tis.
Cognate with Irish bras (“swift”) and Latin festīnus (“swift”).[1] Note also Proto-Germanic *brēþaz (“rushed”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrē- (“seethe, toss about, cook”).
