Usage notes
The meaning "pregnant" is generally used only in the feminine, except in very informal contexts or used by uneducated people, usually referring to animals that the speaker does not know the gender of or certain animals such as sapo (“frog”) in which the gender is assumed to be masculine even though the animal is actually female.
