Etymology

cờ (board game with pieces or tokens) +‎ vây (to encircle; to surround), calque of Chinese 圍棋 / 围棋 (vi kì). Compare Japanese 囲碁 (igo).

Attested in the Dictionarium Anamitico Latinum (1773 manuscript), listed alongside cờ tướng, cờ tiên and cờ song lục as various board games.[1]
