cangadhe

Albanian

Alternative forms

  • cagadhe, cangalle

Etymology

Disputed. The distribution of the word in southern Tosk, in Gjirokastër area and Chameria region, but not in the western Tosk, indicates it entered from Greek. Either from an Italian form of zanco (left) via Greek τςαγγάδα (tsangáda, id.) according to Meyer, or from Turkish چنگال ("çang-al") with a ç:c alteration, according to Dizdari based on the alternative form cangalle.[1][2] From Albanian, it went into Aromanian as tsangadhe.[3]
