Unadapted borrowing from Chavacano chinchao, from earlier variant chanchao, from Philippine Spanish chanchau, from Hokkien 仙草 (sian-chháu / chhian-chháu / chhan-chháu / chhin-chháu, grass jelly) / 田草 (chhân-tsháu, grass jelly). Compare Hiligaynon sansaw, Indonesian cincau, and Malay cincau.
