dấu (“mark”) +‎ ngã (“to trip; to fall”) (from the fact that the word ngã has the tone written with a tilde).

The dấu ngã diacritic itself derives from the Greek περισπωμένη (perispoméni, “circumflex”), which is a doublet of dấu mũ (“circumflex”).
