Etymology

From daan +‎ -g- +‎ bakal, literally “road of iron”. Initially suggested by Isabelo de los Reyes to Samahan ng mga Mananagalog (Society of Tagalog Writers) in early 20th century for the formation and use of Tagalog words to replace the Spanish loanwords. See also Spanish ferrocarril.
