From earlier deigr +‎ -yn (singulative suffix), from Middle Welsh deigyr, from Proto-Brythonic *dėgr, from Proto-Celtic *dakrū, from Proto-Indo-European *dáḱruh₂, plural of *dáḱru. Cognate with Cornish dager.
