Inherited from Vulgar Latin *discantāre, from Latin dis- + cantō. Compare Aromanian discãntu, discãntari, Friulian discjantâ (“disenchant, awaken, make wiser”), Venetan descantar (“wake up, sharpen up”); cf. also French déchanter.
