Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *widertjā, with loss of the first unstressed syllable, from Proto-Indo-European *sweyd- (compare Ancient Greek ἱδρώς (hidrṓs), English sweat, Italian sudore).[1] For Albanian d < PIE *sw compare diell.
Alternatively, from Proto-Albanian *dértsā (“effusion”), with no further general accepted reconstruction. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰérǵʰ-ti̯(-)ah₂ (or *dʰérǵʰ-ii̯o-n ?), with a semantic shift from "revolution" to "(sweat) effusion". Neri considers an etymological connection to Proto-Indo-European *sweyd-, and relation to Greek ῑ̆̔δρώς (hī̆drṓs) and Latin sūdor, problematic, specifically with the reconstruction of *su̯idroti̯ah₂, because of the phonetic law postulated by Pederson #sw > Alb. #d, which is contradicted by several counterexamples, such as vjehërr (compare also vëlla). While the above etymology suggests a comparison to diell for #sw > #d, the etymology of diell is also contested. Another problem is an unexpected simplification of *dr > *d.[2]
