From Proto-Albanian *swexura, from Proto-Indo-European *sueḱue/or-, *swéḱuros (father-in-law). Cognate to Ancient Greek ἑκυρός (hekurós, father-in-law), German Schwieger (mother-in-law), Old English sweor, Latin socer, Russian свёкор (svjókor), Serbo-Croatian svekar, Sanskrit श्वशुर (śvaśura), Armenian սկեսուր (skesur).[1]
