el (“nation, people”) + gün (“foreign people”), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ēl (“realm, people”) and Proto-Turkic *kün (“foreign people”). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (elgün), Karakhanid [script needed] (el kün), and Azerbaijani el gün. [1]
