Etymology
From English fort, from Middle French fort (“strong”). Originally, this word meant "fort" and specifically referred to Fort Zeelandia, but since Fort Zeelandia and Paramaribo are closely connected, the meaning was transferred to the latter.[1] Nowadays, it can refer to any town.
