Etymology

Possibly from Proto-Balto-Slavic *galas, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelH- (ablauted to *gʷol-). Cognates: Lithuanian gãlas (id.), Old Prussian gallan (acc.), golis (death), Old Norse kveld (evening, end of the day), etc. The meaning 'death' probably evolved from 'stab' > 'kill' (galināt, nogalināt 'to kill'); the same development is seen in Proto-West Germanic *kwalm, also from *gʷol-. From 'stab', also probably 'tip' > 'end'.[1]
