From Old Cornish godbod, from Proto-Brythonic *gwɨbod. Originally a compound of bos (to be) with an adjective derived from Proto-Celtic *wid-, from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (to know). Cognate with Breton gouzout and Welsh gwybod.
