    Inherited from Vulgar Latin *grupta ~ *crupta, (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) from Latin crypta, from Ancient Greek κρυπτή (kruptḗ). Doublet of cripta, which Italian borrowed from Latin. Found in the toponym Grotte. Compare Sicilian grutta, the probable source of Spanish gruta and Portuguese gruta.
