Noun
hockey (uncountable)
- Any of a family of sports in which hockey sticks are used to move a ball or puck into a goal.
- (Commonwealth) Field hockey, a team sport played on a pitch on solid ground where players have to hit a ball into a net using a hockey stick.
- He helped his team beat the opponent at hockey 11-9 in a high-scoring match.
- (Canada, US) Ice hockey, a game on ice in which two teams of six players skate and try to score by shooting a puck into the opposing team's net, using their sticks.
- US stadiums are packed in the winter to see ice hockey.
Usage notes
- Although there are many variations of hockey, such as roller hockey, street hockey, shinny, or ball hockey, hockey without a qualifier almost always means ice hockey in the United States and Canada, and field hockey in the Commonwealth, and the full names of the sports are rarely used in these areas except to avoid confusion. Note that neither the ice hockey world cup (World Cup of Hockey) nor the field hockey world cup (Hockey World Cup) include a qualifying term in their official titles.
