  1. to avoid by moving suddenly out of the way; to dodge

Danish

Adverb

idag

Norwegian

Adverb

idag

  1. misspelling of i dag

Usage notes

idag is accepted in Riksmål. Originally a continuation of pre-1938 Bokmål, it has developed into a separate, unofficial written standard used by people who reject the Bokmål spelling reforms of 1938 and 1959. These reforms were mostly further Norwegianisation of the Danish language used in Norway (like the reforms of 1907 and 1917). The 1938 reform was, unlike the previous ones, not only introducing new spellings (like snø, etter, ), but also removing the Danish ones (sne, efter, nu).

  2. today (at the present time)
    1. at present; now, currently, etc.

    2. these days; now, nowadays, etc.
      Near-synonyms: nuförtiden, numera

Usage notes

  • Compared to English, Swedish has a relatively stronger preference for today as opposed to now or currently or the like in (sense 2.1).
  • Nuförtiden and numera normally imply now as opposed to (during some period) in the past, and so are only synonymous with idag when it is used with the same implication.
  • "I dag" is common in newspaper writing. "Idag" is more common otherwise.
