Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ابتدائی (ibtidāi, primitive, fundamental, preparatory),[1] from Arabic اِبْتِدَائِيّ (ibtidāʔiyy, initial, primary, elementary), from اِبْتِدَاء (ibtidāʔ, beginning), verbal noun of اِبْتَدَأَ (ibtadaʔa, to begin, to commence).[2]
