Derived from an older verb *kapt (“to hit”) (cf. Lithuanian kàpti (“to chop, to hit”)), whence also kapāt.^[1]

1. scythe (farming tool consisting of a bent blade attached to a long handle (a snath), used for cutting grass, cereals, etc.)

   asa izkapts ― sharp scythe

   izkapts kāts ― scythe handle, shaft (= snath)

   izkapts labi kož ― the scythe bites (= cuts) well

   asināt izkapti ― to sharpen the scythe

   pļaut sienu ar izkapi ― to mow hay with a scythe
