From Proto-Vietic *k-haːlʔ / *kʰaːlʔ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *kla(ː)ʔ. Cognate with Khmer ខ្លា (khlaa), Bahnar kla, Khasi khla, Mon ကၠ. Doublet of hổ.
Compare also Khmer ខាល (khaal, “Year of the Tiger”), loaned from an unidentified Vietic source.
