Borrowed from Swahili malaika (“angel”), from Arabic مَلَائِكَة (malāʔika), plural of مَلْأَك (malʔak), from Ge'ez መልአክ (mälʾäk, “messenger, angel”), a calque of Aramaic מַלְאֲכָא / ܡܠܐܟܐ (malʾăḵā, “angel, messenger”), and Hebrew מַלְאָךְ (malʾā́ḵ, “angel, messenger”).
