Compound of mahkamah (“court”) +‎ agung (“supreme”), previously pengadilan agung (1942-1945), a calque from Japanese 最高法院(さいこうほういん) (saikōhōin, “supreme court”), term used in East Asia, except for Japanese home islands, 最高裁判所(さいこうさいばんしょ) (saikōsaibansho). Continuation of Dutch hooggerechtshof and Japanese 最高法院(さいこうほういん) (saikōhōin, “supreme court”).
