Etymology
Some suggest a compound of mah (“arm, hand”) + tlāctli (“torso, trunk”), thus “both arms; ten”, and implying a semantic relation or contrast with mācuīlli (“five”), based on mā- (“arm, hand”) + cui (“to take, hold”), thus “what is held in one arm or hand; five”.
