Etymology
Perhaps borrowed from Ukrainian макі́тра (makítra) or its etymon Old Ruthenian *макотъра (*makotra), ultimately from Greek μάκτρα (máktra, “kneading trough, mortar”). Reanalyzed[1] as mak (“poppy”) + -u- + trzeć (“to grind”) through folk etymology.
