Etymology

From Proto-Tai *ɓawᴮ (“not (strong)”)[1] or Proto-Tai *boːᴮ (ditto).[1] The tone of Zhuang mbouj [ɓouꟲ¹] shows irregularity as a reflex of them.

Compare Thai บ่ (bɔ̀ɔ) (dialectal), Isan บ่อ, Lao ບໍ່ (bǭ), Lü ᦢᧁᧈ (ḃaw¹), Nong Zhuang mboq, Old Chinese 不 (OC *pɯ, *pɯʔ, *pɯ', “not”).
