mbouj

Zhuang

Etymology

From Proto-Tai *ɓawᴮ (not (strong))[1] or Proto-Tai *boːᴮ (ditto).[1] The tone of Zhuang mbouj [ɓouꟲ¹] shows irregularity as a reflex of them.

Compare Thai บ่ (bɔ̀ɔ) (dialectal), Isan บ่อ, Lao ບໍ່ (), ᦢᧁᧈ (ḃaw¹), Nong Zhuang mboq, Old Chinese (OC *pɯ, *pɯʔ, *pɯ', “not”).
