Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Vietic *k-ɗɔːk (“nape (of the neck)”), itself derived from Old Chinese 脰 (OC *kə.dˤok-s) (B-S) (SV: đậu) through a regular sound-change which yielded also Vietnamese nong (“winnowing basket”) from Proto-Austroasiatic *kɗoːŋ (“(idem)”)). This sound change precludes connection to dọc (“long and straight leaf stalks of some plants”) as proposed by Baxter-Sagart (2014).
