Through syncope from dialectal pyves, alteration of pëves, from Old Albanian pëvetën, from Proto-Albanian *apu-wait-ja, from Proto-Indo-European *weyt-; compare Serbo-Croatian véćati (“to deliberate, confer”), Lithuanian vaiténti (“to discuss”), and possibly Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬉𐬚𐬀 f (vaēθa, “judgment, verdict”).[1] Alternatively, from Proto-Albanian *pūta, related to Latin putō (“to reckon, to ponder”) and Proto-Slavic *pȳtàti.[2]
