From Old Swedish rætfærdhogher, from Old Norse réttferðugr, from Middle Low German rechtverdich, from Old Saxon reht (“right”) + fard (“journey”) + -ig.

The Middle Low German is also the source of German rechtfertigen, Danish retfærdig, Norwegian rettferdig.
