Etymology

From Middle Irish (red dye plant, lady's bedstraw, madder),[1] from Old French rue (rue), from Latin rūta, from Ancient Greek ῥῡτή (rhūtḗ). Rue itself is not used in dyeing; the association with red dye may be attributed to the word’s phonological similarity to rúad (red).
