From Middle Irish rú (“red dye plant, lady's bedstraw, madder”),^[1] from Old French rue (“rue”), from Latin rūta, from Ancient Greek ῥῡτή (rhūtḗ). Rue itself is not used in dyeing; the association with red dye may be attributed to the word’s phonological similarity to rúad (“red”).
