From Proto-Vietic *ruh, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruh ~ *ruuh ~ *ruəh ~ *rəh ~ *rah ~ *raah ~ *rih ~ *rus ~ *ruəs ~ *rəs ~ *rəəs ~ *raas ~ *ris ~ *ruʔ ~ *ruəʔ ~ *raʔ (“to fall, be shed”); cognate with Bahnar ruh, Khmer រុះ (ruh), Mon ပြဟ် (proh), Temiar roh (“to fall (of leaves)”).
