Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *reyk- (to tear, scratch; streak).[1] Cognate with Proto-Germanic *raih- (row, streak, line), Latin rixa (quarrel, brawl), and perhaps Sanskrit लिखति (likhati, to scratch, scrape, pierce).
