ruột
Vietnamese
Alternative forms
- (North Central Vietnam) rọt (no diphthongization)
- (Mekong Delta, widespread as internet slang) guột (with /r-/ > /ɣ-/)
Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *rɔːc, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruuc ~ *ruəc. Cognate with Muong rọch, Arem rùəc, Proto-Katuic *rɔɔc (whence Pacoh roiq) and Mon ကြုတ်.
Pronunciation
Noun
(classifier bộ) ruột • (律, 𦛌, 𦝬)
- (anatomy) intestine
- inner tube
- Synonym: săm
Usage notes
- For "small intestine" and "large intestine", modern Standard Written Vietnamese (MSWV) prefers the native ruột non and ruột già over tiểu tràng (小腸) and đại tràng (大腸). Sino-Vietnamese items seem more common for manh tràng (盲腸) (over ruột tịt (“caecum”)) and trực tràng (直腸) (over ruột thẳng (“rectum”)). hồi tràng (迴腸, “ileum”) has no "native" equivalent, ruột thừa (“appendix”) has no SV equivalent, tá tràng (“duodenum”) is a self-coined sinicized term.
