Inherited from Malay sedang, from Old Javanese sĕḍaṅ, sĕḍĕṅ (right, appropriate; just, while), probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *rɔm (appropriate, worthy).

Inherited from Malay sedang. KBBI recognises the use of sedang as a particle as a separate etymology to its use as an adverb. However, Echols and Shadily (1989) recognise them as having the same etymology.
