Orthographic borrowing from French semaine, derived from Late Latin septimāna, derived from Latin septimānus (of or pertaining to the seventh in a series). Compare Spanish semana, Italian settimàna, as well as Romanian săptămână and Moroccan Arabic سيمانة (sīmāna).
