Orthographic borrowing from French semaine, derived from Late Latin septimāna, derived from Latin septimānus (“of or pertaining to the seventh in a series”). Compare Spanish semana, Italian settimàna, as well as Romanian săptămână and Moroccan Arabic سيمانة (sīmāna).
