From Proto-Indo-European *semH- (“to scoop, draw”).[1] Cognate with Latin sentīna (“bilgewater, bilge (of a ship)”), Proto-Celtic *semeti (“to pour”), and possibly Ancient Greek ᾰ̓́μη (ắmē, “shovel; pail”).
