Borrowed from Spanish siete, from Latin septem. The “gossip” sense may possibly be from the following:
- From ellipsis of siyete pekados, gay slang meaning “gossipmonger”, from Spanish siete pecados capitales (“seven deadly sins”).
- From Spanish hablar más que siete (“talking excessively”, literally “talking more than seven”)
- Some controversy in the 1980s involving Student Canteen under the GMA Network's channel 7.
