snábděti

Old Czech

Alternative forms

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sъnabъděti and *sъnabъďati. By surface analysis, s- +‎ na- +‎ bdieti.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): (13th CE) /ˈsnaːbɟi̯ɛci/
  • IPA(key): (15th CE) /ˈsnaːbɟɛci/

Verb

snábděti impf

  1. to care for, to observe
    • 1417, Bible olomoucká:
Synu mój, snábděj řěči mé a k mé mluvě přichyl ucho své.
(please add an English translation of this quotation)

Usage notes

  • The dictionary claims the verb's being 3rd class and imperfective. The examples support its being imperfective, but many contain forms of the 5th class (snábdie, snábděj etc.). The class and imperfectiveness would suggest its ancestor's being *sъnabъďati.
