Borrowed from a Germanic language, perhaps Gothic *𐍃𐍀𐌰𐌹𐌷𐌰 (*spaiha) or from a Frankish cognate,[2] ultimately from Proto-Germanic *spehōną (“to see, look”). Cognates include obsolete French épie (“spy”), Spanish espía (“spy”), English spy and German spähen (“to peek, to spy”).
