From Old Norse svar (answer, reply), either derived from the verb svara or inherited from Proto-Germanic *swarō (solemn statement), cognate with English swear (compare sværge (swear), from Proto-Germanic *swarjaną). Compare also the compound *andaswarō (reply) in English answer and Danish ansvar (responsibility).

From Old Norse svárr, from Proto-Germanic *swēraz, cognate with Swedish svår, German schwer, Dutch zwaar. Doublet of svær. The Danish form with a is influenced by Middle Low German swār.
