Etymology 1
From Old Norse svar (“answer, reply”), either derived from the verb svara or inherited from Proto-Germanic *swarō (“solemn statement”), cognate with English swear (compare sværge (“swear”), from Proto-Germanic *swarjaną). Compare also the compound *andaswarō (“reply”) in English answer and Danish ansvar (“responsibility”).

From Old Norse svárr, from Proto-Germanic *swēraz, cognate with Swedish svår, German schwer, Dutch zwaar. Doublet of svær. The Danish form with a is influenced by Middle Low German swār.
