Borrowed from Japanese 炭酸 (tansan, “carbonated; carbonic acid”), an ellipsis of 炭酸飲料 (tansan inryō, “carbonated drink”), a genericized trademark by Clifford-Wilkinson Tansan Mineral Water Co., Ltd. popular in the Philippines in the early 20th century, initially romanized and introduced as "TANSAN" on metal bottlecaps and on English marketing material.
