tarmitét

Old Irish

Alternative forms

  • tremi·tét

Etymology

From tarmi- +‎ ·tét. Calque of Latin transgredior.

Pedersen and DIL treat tremi·tét[1][2] and tarmi·tét[3][4] as synonyms formed with different prefixes, but Thurneysen points out that tremi- is regularly found for tarmi- in pretonic position,[5] implying that the two are morphologically equivalent.

A separate verb tremi·tét (to traverse; to penetrate) actually does have tremi- from tre- (through).
