Borrowed from Old Javanese tumĕṅguṅ (compare with Javanese ꦠꦸꦩꦼꦁꦒꦸꦁ (tumenggung)) infixing taṅguṅ (“carrying, bearing, burden, load”) with -um-; reanalysable as tanggung + -em-.[1]

- (historical) high-ranking official in some Malay sultanates under the bendahara (royal treasurer), typically in charge of the police or armed forces.
