From Javanese ꦠꦺꦫꦺꦴꦁ (térong), ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *d₁rɗuŋ, *d₁rɗuəŋ (“egg-plant, bottle-gourd”).[1] The alternative form terung is inherited from Malay.
